Welcome to the New York Headache Center
2023 was the 25th year Dr. Mauskop had been selected by his peers as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor.
If you suffer from headaches, we can help. We offer a unique approach, which can be called integrative medicine. It is a combination of traditional medicine and methods variously categorized as functional, complementary or alternative therapies. Many of these complementary therapies and Botox injections help our patients achieve and maintain relief without the need for conventional medications which are more likely to cause serious side effects. We also offer MRI or fMRI-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which also has very few side effects.
We treat children and adults with chronic migraines, tension-type, cluster, and other types of headaches, post-concussion syndrome, cranial neuralgias, and facial pain.
Treatments we provide in the office include nerve blocks, sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) blocks, injections of sumatriptan, or intravenous treatments, such as magnesium, ketorolac (Toradol), metoclopramide (Reglan), Ondansetron (Zofran), dihydroergotamine (DHE-45), dexamethasone (Decadron), Vyepti, and others. We do not stock any opioid (narcotic) drugs.
We also treat children with headaches. In children, we particularly emphasize safer, non-drug approaches. These may include biofeedback or meditation, magnesium, CoQ10, riboflavin, feverfew, other supplements, and Botox injections. The youngest child we’ve treated with Botox was 6 years old (the oldest was 100). The procedure to administer Botox for chronic migraine is very brief and causes minimal discomfort. The headache clinic is led by Dr. Alexander Mauskop, a board-certified neurologist and a headache specialist with over 30 years of experience in treating headaches and pain. In the early 1990s, he was one of the first neurologists to start using Botox for the treatment of headaches. Since then, he has treated thousands of patients and trained over 300 doctors from across the United States and around the world in the use of Botox. He participated in research studies that led to the FDA approval of Botox for the treatment of chronic migraines and many studies of different migraine medications. He has published many articles on magnesium, herbal supplements, and other topics. His fourth and most comprehensive book, The End of Migraines: 150 Ways to Stop Your Pain is available on Amazon.
Dr. Mauskop’s main research interest has been the role of alternative therapies, particularly magnesium in relieving migraine, cluster, and other types of headaches. He and his colleagues were the first to study intravenous magnesium infusion for the treatment of migraine and cluster headaches. Their many publications and lectures have made this therapy a part of the standard approach to the treatment of migraine headaches in many emergency rooms and doctor offices.
He has given lectures at institutions such as Cornell, Harvard, Columbia, NYU, and Dartmouth Medical Schools, Mayo and Cleveland Clinics in the US, and leading hospitals in Europe, such as Charité in Berlin.
You can keep up with the latest news in the field of headaches by subscribing to his blog. Since 2007, he has written over 900 blog posts. There are close to 3,000 comments that you may also find useful.
Drs. Sara Crystal and Britany Klenofsky are neurologists with additional subspecialty training in headache medicine. Dr. Crystal was selected for the New York Times Magazine supplement SuperDoctors in 2018, 2019, and 2024. Our nurse practitioners, Richelle Cassell and Marcella Caprara are very knowledgeable and compassionate headache specialists. We all work as a team, discussing challenging cases, updating each other on new developments in the field of headaches, and providing continuity of care when one of us is away.
Headache sufferers from all over the US and the world travel to our Center. We’ve treated patients from Angola, Argentina, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Panama, Peru, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, UK, Ukraine, Venezuela, and other countries.
