Amber contact lenses
A recent small study suggests that wearing red colored contact lenses can relieve pain of a migraine attack. A recent small study suggests that wearing red colored contact lenses can relieve pain of a migraine attack. At the NYHC we have tried this approach and in a several patients it made a dramatic difference. One woman has found that she no longer has to be confined to a dark room and is able to go outside wearing these lenses without developing a migraine from bright daylight. Some patients wear these lenses all the time, while others only when they have a headache. Sunglasses do not offer the same level of light filtering, uinless they are of wraparound type and fit tightly around the eyes.
Are there any contact lenses you currently recommend for dealing with photophobia?
From your blog I only recently learned of the possibility of contact lenses to manage photophobia and greatly appreciate the heads up on something that might help me manage this aspect of my migraine related issues.
I see that the Nike Maxsight was discontinued subsequent to your posts.
(I today tried out “Acuvue Oasys 2-Week with Transitions.” Those might help me at the margin, but anecdotally I was still overwhelmed with them just now while trying them out in the brutal fluorescent lighting at the CVS near my house. At least in my n=1 sample size, those don’t appear like they’ll be adequate for me to handle the nature of the issues with lighting I experience, particularly fluorescent lighting.)
I’ve come across references to Lavender BioMed soft contact lenses and Altius performance contact lenses in starting to look up other options.
Thanks!
Since the nike contacts have been discontinued, where can my eye doctor and I find similar lenses?
I have been wearing amber contacts from Nike Maxsight, you have to get them at the eye doctor. Yes, they make a dramatic difference. I am actually to the point of disabled by refractory migraine and I wear these contacts from morning till night. They are the only thing that allows me to leave the house. I tell people the relief they provide is like putting water on a a burn. The contacts are more helpful than all of the meds. You must try them.
